What Is Acne?

Acne vulgaris is the term for a group of skin conditions that cause most acne pimples. Acne starts when the pores in your skin get clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Acne is typically categorized into two main types: non-inflammatory and inflammatory acne. Acne is also described as mild, moderate or severe acne, or sometimes given a grade of either grade I, II, III or IV acne. Many factors contribute to the development of acne, including genetics, diet, stress, hormone changes and infections.
The main types of acne include:
  • Non-inflammatory acne—characterized by whiteheads and blackheads, but not cysts/nodules.
  • Inflammatory acne— usually caused by small infections due to P. Acnes bacteria.
  • Cystic acne (also called nodulocystic acne)— an intense form of acne that results in large, inflamed cysts and nodules that appear on the skin
  • Acne Fulminans— a severe form of inflammatory acne that usually affects adolescent males on jaw, chest and back.
  • Acne Mechanica:— triggered by excess pressure, heat, and friction. Often affects athletes, causing small bumps and some inflamed lesions.
The main causes of acne include:
  • Clogged pores, caused by things like excess oil production and dead skin cells. Sebum is the type of oil released into hair follicles that can become trapped beneath surface of the skin and clog pores.
  • Bacteria.
  • Hormone fluctuations or imbalances. For example, when androgen hormones increase oil production rises. This often happens in teens and young adults suffering from acne, especially women experiencing PMS, irregular periods, pregnancy, early menopause, and other hormonal conditions such as poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
  • Poor diet, such as the “Standard American Diet” that includes lots of refined grains, sugar and unhealthy fats.
  • High amounts of stress and related problems like psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety.
  • Use of certain medications, including corticosteroids, androgens, birth control pills and lithium.
  • Friction and irritation to the skin, such as from sports equipment and backpacks that can lead to acne breakouts on the chin, forehead, jawline and back.
  • Genetic predisposition.
  • Smoking and other causes of inflammation.

The home remedies for acne described below can be used in combination to provide the best results. However, keep in mind that while you overcome acne it’s also very important to avoid the biggest mistakes that can make skin irritation or scarring worse:

  2. Over cleansing with harsh chemicals and cleansers
  3. Believing only topical care of the skin is necessary to fight acne
  4. Not giving skin the chance to adapt to new care

Acne home remedy: Tea Tree Oil


With its natural inflammation-fighting properties, a 5 percent solution of tea tree oil is less harsh than a 5 percent benzoyl peroxide solution and can be just as effective against acne, though it may clear up a little less quickly. 

Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with between 20 and 40 drops of witch hazel, then use a cotton swab to apply. This is one of those home remedies for acne that you can try up to twice a day; more could dry your skin and make the acne worse.

Acne home remedy: Green Tea


Green tea has antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds that can help fight acne. To get its effects, use a cooled cup of green tea as a face wash or lay the bag over the affected area.

Acne home remedy: Honey

Honey’s antibiotic properties can help improve acne. Apply a teaspoon of honey to affected areas, or make a mask by mixing 1/2 cup of honey with 1 cup of plain oatmeal and leaving it on for 30 minutes.

Acne home remedy: Mint


Mint can help remove pore-clogging oil. To help clear acne before it begins, mix 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh mint with two tablespoons each of plain yogurt and oatmeal (use a blender to pulverize the oatmeal to powder). Leave the concoction on your face for 10 minutes, then rinse off with water.

Acne home remedy: Echinacea

Echinacea is traditionally used to speed wound healing and prevent colds and flu, but its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties can help with acne as well. Use echinacea tea as a daily face wash by soaking a cloth with it, or put a few drops of tincture on a cotton ball and dab it on blemishes.

Acne home remedy: Asprin

The salicylic acid in aspirin is a go-to for acne treatments, and the aspirin can dry up pimples and reduce inflammation. To take advantage of these home remedies for acne, form a paste by mashing aspirin in a little water, or dissolve four pills in 2 tablespoons. 

Acne home remedy: Chamomile

Chamomile helps decrease inflammation from acne. In a blender or coffee grinder, combine the contents of a chamomile tea bag with enough water to form a paste, and apply that to acne. Alternately, steep two chamomile tea bags with 1 cup boiled water for 15 minutes. Let the tea cool, then use a cotton ball to dab it on your face after cleansing. 


Acne home remedy: Aloe


Aloe, known for its burn-relieving properties, can promote healing, fight infection, and even reduce scarring. Scrape the gel from an aloe plant out with a spoon to make one of these home remedies for acne, and apply to acne. You can also buy aloe gel from health-food stores—just make sure it’s pure aloe, with no added ingredients.

Acne home remedy: Lemons

Lemons act as an exfoliant, skin lightener, and disinfectant to reduce the appearance of scars and prevent new pimples from forming. On a clean face, dab acne with a cotton ball or cotton swab dipped in lemon juice, then rinse with cool water. 

Acne home remedy: Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains malic and lactic acids that can exfoliate, reduce red marks, and treat acne. For a DIY toner, mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water and apply to skin with a cotton ball, making sure to shake well before each use.

Acne home remedy: Acidic foods

Acidic foods like citrus fruit juice or vinegar can flush pores. Dab a little onto a cotton ball to help battle acne; gently swipe the cotton on the affected areas. 


4 Effective Natural Acne Remedies

After some experimenting and research on natural spot-treatments, I have narrowed it down to these 4 simple, inexpensive homemade beauty skincare recipes that are worth a try:

1. Yogurt Face Mask

Yogurt Face Mask
Why it works: Yogurt acts as a gentle natural cleanser thanks to its antibacterial properties. Even better, yogurt that contains probiotics is recommended for improving skin conditions, including acne. You can also add other ingredients to enhance the mask’s benefits. Try oatmeal, for example, which gently exfoliates and helps to tighten pores.
What to do: Take 2 tablespoons of plain low fat yogurt and apply a thin layer to your face (the oil in full-fat yogurt can make your skin greasy). Allow it to dry and rinse off with lukewarm water. To make a yogurt and oatmeal face mask, just add a handfuls of oatmeal to the yogurt, mix into a paste and leave in the refrigerator for a few hours to give the oatmeal a chance to absorb some of the yogurt. Apply to the face, leave for around 20 minutes and rinse off with warm water.

2. Garlic, Turmeric, and Manuka Honey Face Mask

Garlic Face Mask
Why it works: Garlic is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral, so it’s perfect for fighting pimples. Turmeric has similar qualities and is also anti-inflammatory. Manuka Honey, produced by bees in New Zealand who feed on the manuka bush, has been shown to heal blemished skin and help prevent breakouts.
What to do: Cleanse your face before you start. Crush 6 garlic cloves, add 2-3 spoonfuls of Manuka honey and a tiny amount of turmeric powder. Mix together and spread onto your skin’s problem areas. Alternatively, you can swap turmeric for 3-4 spoonfuls of cinnamon and forgo the garlic altogether if you’d prefer.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Why it works: Tea tree oil is widely featured in facial washes and cleansers because it’s a natural antiseptic and has antibacterial qualities. However, commercial products will often only include a relatively small amount of the oil. Using the oil in larger does gives a much stronger impact.
What to do: Rub a small amount of tea tree oil onto blemishes.

4. Kaolin Clay

Kaolin Face Clay
Why it works: Kaolin clay draws out impurities from the skin and soaks up excess oil. If you’ve got large pores, it can reduced their size. French green Kaolin clay, in particular, is great for removing impurities from oily skin.
What to do: Cleanse your face and make sure that your skin is damp before you apply a thin layer of clay and allow it to dry. Rinse off with warm water.
